Manchester United are reportedly interested in making a summer move for Upamecano as they eye up a quality defender to help overcome their defensive difficulties at the start of the campaign. The 22-year-old’s release clause drops to £38 million in 2021 and that has alerted the Red Devils and many other clubs, per The Times.
Upamecano lined up against United at Old Trafford in their Champions League clash, but there was nothing the Frenchman could do to prevent the Red Devils running away with the game and securing an impressive victory. The 22-year-old, though, did display some of his ability, making five tackles and maintaining an 85% passing accuracy (Sofascore).
However, the longer the game went on the more he struggled, and he did fail to make a single interception and ended up giving away the ball 13 times (Sofascore). The introduction of Marcus Rashford, who registered a hat trick inside the last 20 minutes, turned the defender’s evening into a torrid one.
United fans react to the performance of Dayot Upamecano
Some Manchester United fans were keen to point out that the defender will have a simple decision to make over whether to join them now after seeing the level of performance they can produce. While others pointed out that his value may have just been taken down by the Red Devils themselves.
Ed probably told Rashford to destroy Upamecano so we can get him for cheaper. Ed playing 4D chess here.#MUFC
