Manchester United are considering a move to sign Porto goalkeeper Diogo Costa next summer, according to reports.

The Lowdown: £64m release clause

The Portuguese has recently participated in the World Cup after being selected to represent Fernando Santos’ side, and despite not having a successful tournament, has still managed to attract interest.

The 6 foot 1 shot-stopper has only just signed a new contract at the Estadio do Dragao until 2027, but with his deal including a €75m (£64m) release clause, he’s now been linked with a move to the Premier League.

The Latest: United eyeing Costa

According to Portuguese outlet A Bola (via Sport Witness), United’s interest in Costa is ‘firm’, with Erik Ten Hag viewing him as a ‘potential signing’ for the 2023/24 season.

Jorge Mendes is the 23-year-old’s agent and it’s believed that he will be able to ‘open’ doors to the top flight for his player, though it yet remains to be seen whether the Primeira Liga outfit would ‘accept’ negotiations.

The Verdict: De Gea alternative

David De Gea isn’t getting any younger (32), and Costa putting pen to paper would provide an ideal alternative and excellent competition for places between the sticks.

The Switzerland-born talent has already kept nine clean sheets from 19 games this term, form which has seen him dubbed a ‘wall’ by talent scout Jacek Kulig.

Porto remaining secretive in their stance isn’t helpful from a Red Devils point of view, though Costa would be a keeper worth cashing out for if the opportunity to bring him to Old Trafford was to arise.
