Fabrizio Romano has provided a fresh update on Manchester United’s pursuit of Juventus midfielder Adrien Rabiot.

Rabiot was linked with a move to Old Trafford following United’s opening weekend defeat against Brighton. A deal worth an initial £15m plus add-ons was thought to have been agreed between the two clubs during the week, with personal terms needing to be finalised.

Erik ten Hag is ‘very keen’ on the midfielder, labelled as ‘incredible’ by Gianluigi Buffon, but a transfer is still yet to be completed.

The Latest: Romano’s update

Romano took to Twitter on Sunday morning to provide an update on United and Rabiot, less than 24 hours on from the club’s 4-0 defeat against Brentford.

The transfer expert stated that United ‘want to push’ for Rabiot, with a ‘new round of talks’ with his mother and agent Veronique set to take place soon.

Romano added that ‘all parties involved are now really confident to get the deal done’, with Juventus waiting to receive an initial fee, should a transfer go through.

The Verdict: More needed

Saturday evening’s embarrassing defeat to Brentford just emphasised the need for new signings, so hopefully, Rabiot will be the first of many through the door over the coming weeks.

He’ll provide Ten Hag with a much-needed new midfield option, with the Frenchman capable of playing as a holding or central midfielder, so should provide competition to Fred and Scott McTominay.

Rabiot also has an eye for goal with 33 strikes for club and country, more than his tally for assists, and with Ten Hag a fan, you’d expect he could go straight into the starting XI.
