A number of Manchester United fans have urged Ole Gunnar Solskjær to make changes to his defence for his side’s upcoming clash with Newcastle United, with some calling for Teden Mengi to be given a chance.
United have endured a challenging start to the campaign, with the Red Devils having shipped 11 goals in their opening three matches. Their 6-1 defeat against Tottenham Hotspur saw Harry Maguire come under intense scrutiny, with the defender losing the ball 11 times and making an error leading to a goal (via Sofascore).
Things did not get better for Maguire on international duty with England, with the 27-year-old receiving a red card for two clumsy challenges in a 1-0 defeat against Denmark. That left Gareth Southgate needing to issue a defence of the former Leicester City centre-back.
Solskjær does have options to change things up if he wants to take Maguire out of the firing line. Eric Bailly could partner Victor Lindelof, while Marcus Rojo remains at the club and Axel Tuanzebe could also do a job in the middle of the back four if selected.
If the United manager wants to put his faith in youth though, he could opt to give Mengi a chance. The 18-year-old made his debut in the Europa League last term against LASK and has been promoted to the first-team squad. Solskjær has even described him as having something ‘special’ about him.
Some United fans were calling for Mengi to start against Newcastle, while others just wanted to see Maguire taken out of the spotlight.
United fans urge Solskjær to make bold Mengi decision
Give Mengi a start. Martial and Rashford got a chance at that age, but with defenders we seem to be more risk-averse. Give the lad a go, preferably alongside the calm head of Lindelof.

Got to take Maguire out of the side for the next couple of games. The lad is struggling. Needs protecting. He needs a couple of weeks away from football. Yes United’s options at the back aren’t great. Get Mengi in the side. The lads a talent. Trust him.

How many times have lindelof and bailly played together? Not enough to make a good assessment. This is a great opportunity to give Tuanzebe some game time and Mengi is chomping at the bit!!

Might have to what Southgate does and play with a back five because we dont have two CBs we can rely on

It’s time for 3 CB.
