Finance expert Dan Plumley believes that Manchester United could be one of the first English teams to re-join the Super League, Football Insider report.

The Lowdown: New update

Reports last week revealed that Bernd Reichart has been hired by A22 Sports Management, a company which was formed to help create the proposed 12-team breakaway league in April last year.

He is hopeful that English clubs will engage over plans to have a new European Super League up and running by the 2024/25 season. United were one of 12 founding members last year before pulling out, but Plumley believes that the Glazers could get back involved.

The Latest: Plumley’s comments

Plumley, who contributes for Sky Sports, was talking to FI and believes that United could be tempted back into Super League plans, however, he believes that could lead to further backlash from Old Trafford supporters.

“I think in terms of whether or not they could lead the other five back into contention, I’m not so sure.

“But I think it’s clear they would be involved in the Super League, particularly when you look at the ownership structure.

“From what we’ve seen from the Glazers over the years, we know they have been front and centre of these things. So, I think there is every possibility that United could get back involved.

“A lot of this for the English clubs over the next two or three years will come down to the fanbase. It was the supporters who shut it down with their backlash, and the clubs weren’t prepared for that.

“So at a commercial, financial and boardroom level, United and a lot of clubs will be up for this again. But the relationship with the fans will need to be managed, and that could turn things.”

The Verdict: Not a clever idea

The Glazers’ current relationship with United supporters is far from positive, so throwing themselves back into the idea of a Super League proposal may not be a good idea.

Backlash from fans in England led to the six Premier League sides pulling out of plans in 2021, and you’d expect that a return would be met with the same anger.

Speculation over a Super League isn’t going away, though, so it could be one to keep an eye on, and hopefully, United decide to not engage in conversation with Reichart.
