Manchester United have had ‘no fresh talks’ with Barcelona midfielder Frenkie De Jong despite outlets stating otherwise, according to transfer insider Fabrizio Romano.

The Lowdown: Ten Hag’s contact

The Premier League giants were credited with a strong interest in the 25-year-old for the majority of the summer but a deal failed to materialise before deadline day.

The Dutchman has again recently been linked with a switch to Old Trafford, with reports suggesting that Erik Ten Hag has made fresh contact with his representatives, though these claims now appear untrue.

The Latest: De Jong not in discussions

Taking to Twitter, Romano revealed that United are in fact not currently in negotiations with De Jong regarding a potential move in 2023.

“Nothing has changed around Frenkie de Jong despite new rumours about Manchester United. It’s still the same situation as last summer.

“No fresh talks, his focus is on Barca as of today. And… also Chelsea wanted Frenkie, not just Man Utd.”

The Verdict: Worth another attempt?

United may not have been successful in their pursuit of De Jong in the previous window, but considering the creativity he could bring to the side, it’s definitely worth making another attempt.

The Arkel native is excellent at contributing in the final third, having clocked up 19 assists and 15 goals during his time at Camp Nou, not to mention he currently has a 90.5% pass success rate.

De Jong’s asking price yet remains to be seen, and whilst it will be difficult to prise him away, the Red Devils should splash the cash if the opportunity was to arise.
