Erik ten Hag has made a six-week head start on an Old Trafford rebuild after recently terminating his Ajax deal.

A reunion with former Ajax midfielder De Jong appears to be high on his radar, with transfer expert Fabrizio Romano revealing earlier this week that United ‘will try again’ in their pursuit of the 25-year-old.

Ten Hag ‘would love to change’ De Jong’s mind over an Old Trafford move, and recent reports have suggested that a move may now be ‘close’.

The Latest: Campbell’s comments

Another player who has been linked with a move to Old Trafford is Chelsea’s N’Golo Kante.

Campbell, who contributes for Sky Sports, was talking to FI regarding the rumours on the two, specifically the update from Romano.

He said Ten Hag needs to add ‘experience’ to his midfield ranks and believes the pair would ‘transform Man United straight away’.

“You need experience as well.

“This is the problem. [Scott] McTominay and Fred are decent players but they are not experienced at the top, top level.

“When you talk about De Jong and Kante you are talking about a Netherlands international at Barcelona and a World Cup winner. Kante has won Premier League titles with two clubs. He is a top player.

“Yes, he has suffered injuries of late but the geezer’s a running machine when fit. He’s unbelievable.

“Those two signings would transform Man United straight away. I like the names they’re talking about. The key is, can they get them?”

The Verdict: Needed

There is a real possibility Ten Hag will have just three senior midfielders left at Old Trafford over the coming months.

Nemanja Matic is set to leave, while Paul Pogba, Jesse Lingard and Juan Mata are all out of contract. That will leave Ten Hag with Scott McTominay, Fred and Bruno Fernandes.

Therefore, it is clear that midfield reinforcements are needed, one of which being De Jong. Ten Hag will know how to get the best out of his fellow countryman after their time at Ajax, so hopefully, a deal can go through over the coming months.

If Kante were to follow, United fans would surely start to believe Ten Hag is finally the man to turn things around.
