Manchester United midfielder Marcel Sabitzer has been ruled out of the Europa League first leg with Real Betis through injury.

The Lowdown: Old Trafford start

Sabitzer made a loan move to Old Trafford on deadline day from Bayern Munich after an injury update emerged on Christian Eriksen.

Since then, the 28-year-old has made seven appearances for the club, one of which came in the 7-0 defeat to Liverpool in the Premier League last time out.

Erik ten Hag will be looking for an immediate response from his side this evening, however, unfortunately, he will be without Sabitzer.

The Latest: Injury news

Ten Hag confirmed in his pre-match press conference that Sabitzer won’t be available for selection.

The United boss didn’t go into detail but described the news as a ‘disappointment’.

The Verdict: Not ideal

Ten Hag could do with having as many options available as possible, including Sabitzer, who has made four starts for the club since arriving.

He has been hailed as having a 'great mentality' by Bayern board member Hasan Salihamidzic so would’ve been a good option to have in the squad, even if that meant coming in from the bench as he has outperformed Eriksen, Fred and Scott McTominay, as per WhoScored.

However, Ten Hag will have to make do without the Austria international, who even has Champions League experience under his belt in recent months, but hopefully, his absence won’t be long-term with the return leg in Spain pencilled in for next Thursday.
