Manchester United are still being linked with a move for Borussia Monchengladbach forward Marcus Thuram on a possible free transfer.

The Lowdown: Thuram’s season so far

Thuram can play anywhere across the front three, but is mainly a centre-forward and is out of contract at the end of the campaign.

The 25-year-old has enjoyed a positive season in front of goal, contributing to 18 goals in 25 games in all competitions. The France international helped his country to the World Cup final in Qatar last year, however, since returning to domestic action, has only scored once in eight Bundesliga games.

It seems that the Red Devils are still interested in his services, though, with reports around the new year even claiming the forward has been dreaming of a move to Old Trafford with his contract situation remaining unresolved since then.

The Latest: Transfer update

A report from Calciomercato provided an update regarding Thuram in the last 48 hours, where United once again received a mention.

It claimed that Inter and Juventus are interested in the soon-to-be free agent, whereas United and Tottenham ‘have already had some contact with the entourage of the player’. Another Premier League side in Newcastle are also monitoring the situation involving Thuram.

The Verdict: Get it done

Erik ten Hag has limited centre-forward options at this moment in time, with left-winger Marcus Rashford the club’s main source of goals in recent months.

Anthony Martial has endured a number of injury issues and Wout Weghorst is only on loan until the end of the season, so bringing in Thuram for free alongside a marquee forward like Victor Osimhen or Harry Kane could be a shrewd move.

Thuram, hailed a ‘beast’ by talent scout Jacek Kulig, now has plenty of experience in the Bundesliga and even on the biggest at the World Cup, registering an assist in the final against Argentina.

Therefore, he could be an ideal option for Ten Hag when it comes to a number nine, especially with the Red Devils on course to once again be featuring in four separate competitions next season.

Should they sell Martial, as has been speculated, and Weghorst returns to his parent club, Thuram could be an ideal option alongside someone like Osimhen or Kane, adding proven strength in depth at Old Trafford. However, the Red Devils will need to beat a number of sides to his services, so it could make sense to offer him pre-contract agreement terms right now.
