Manchester United are 'monitoring' the progress of Bayer Leverkusen right-back Jeremie Frimpong, according to renowned journalist Fabrizio Romano.

The Lowdown: Frimpong impressing in Germany

The 22-year-old has become an important player for the Bundesliga side, starting 20 league matches this season and also making five Champions League appearances.

Frimpong has also scored five goals and registered four assists in the league, highlighting the attacking prowess he possesses from his right-back position.

The Dutchman is out of contract at Leverkusen in 2025 but it could be that he find a new club before then.

The Latest: United 'monitoring' defender

Speaking to Caught Offside, Romano claimed that United have been tracking Frimpong for a number of months but a bid is yet to be tabled for him:

"Despite strong claims about Manchester United edging closer to signing Jeremie Frimpong, I’m told there’s nothing concrete on this one.

"Manchester United are following Frimpong, their scouts have been monitoring him since October as stated many times… but nothing else. No direct talks with agents or Bayer Leverkusen at this stage.

"The priority is to extend Diogo Dalot’s contract, while Aaron Wan-Bissaka has also improved a lot and ended up staying in January."

The Verdict: Wan-Bissaka replacement?

Frimpong could be an ideal signing for United during the summer transfer window, coming in as an upgrade on Aaron Wan-Bissaka and pushing Diogo Dalot for regular starts.

The youngster's aforementioned nine goal contributions in the league this season is far superior to Wan-Bissaka's tally of zero, albeit with the latter making fewer (10) appearances.

At 22, Frimpong would also be considered a long-term acquisition, allowing Erik ten Hag to have two young exciting right-backs at his disposal who can rotate with one another.

The six-time capped Netherlands Under-21 international will surely make his senior bow in the near future and he has been hailed as a 'special' player by Leverkusen manager Xabi Alonso.
