Manchester United are one of the clubs interested in signing Spain and Athletic Bilbao goalkeeper Unai Simon, according to a fresh transfer update.

The Lowdown: Simon starts for Spain

The 25-year-old was part of the Spanish squad in Qatar, not only being picked by Luis Enrique but cementing his place in the starting lineup.

Simon ended up starting all four of Spain's matches, largely performing well and not being able to do much about their penalty shootout exit at the hands of Morocco.

The Bilbao man is an exciting young goalkeeper, particularly with the ball, completing an incredible 93 per cent of his passes for Spain, and it could be that a move to the Premier League is now on the cards.

The Latest: United keen on move

According to a report from Spain, [via Caught Offside], United want to sign Simon at the end of the season, at which point David De Gea will likely depart.

Erik ten Hag is thought to want to sign a goalkeeper who is better with the ball at his feet - something De Gea has naturally struggled with during his career.

The Verdict: De Gea upgrade?

Simon could be a brilliant signing by United if they get a deal over the line, with the 31-cap Spain international tailor-made to suit Ten Hag's ball-playing style.

In that respect, he would be an upgrade on De Gea, and while the current Red Devils stopper has to go down as an Old Trafford great, the modern game has passed him by a little now.

Simon has been hailed as 'incredible' by international teammate Koke, and he would be a long-term signing by United too at just 25, in a deal that ticks so many boxes.
