Manchester United: Jacque Talbot makes Sasa Kalajdzic claim -Follow up

Journalist Jacque Talbot has shed some light on Manchester United‘s potential pursuit of Stuttgart striker Sasa Kalajdzic this summer.

The lowdown: Man Utd interested in Kalajdzic

A recent report from Sky Germany claimed that there was admiration for the 25-year-old from the Red Devils, with £21m mooted as a possible fee.

The Austria international was also billed as a possible target for Borussia Dortmund before the Bundesliga outfit signed Sebastien Haller from Ajax and was previously a target for United’s arch-rivals Liverpool.

Following the speculation linking Kalajdzic with a move to Old Trafford, one well-informed onlooker has certainly not poured cold water on the idea of that becoming a possibility…

The latest: ‘It is possible’

Speaking to Give Me Sport, Talbot – a European football correspondent for The Times and other publications – has claimed that United could view the 15-cap Austrian as an affordable option during the ongoing transder window.

He said: “Kalajdzic, he’s very injury prone, but he’s a really good character in the dressing room. I think he managed 15 games last season. He’d come for about €25m, so that’s quite a cheap option. I mean, that’s possible. It is possible.”

The verdict: Do it

Although the injury claim is certainly backed up by a troubling fitness record, Kalajdzic remains a worthwhile target for the Red Devils, particularly at the previously mooted asking price. It’s one that John Murtough should be confident of reducing even further, given that the Austrian is now in the final 12 months of his contract at Stuttgart.

Standing at a towering 6 foot 7, the giant target man offers a whole new dimension to the attackers at Erik ten Hag’s disposal and would likely help United improve on a woeful record when it came to scoring from set pieces last season, as they ended the campaign with just six headed goals.

Premier League - Manchester United v Everton

Manchester United fans, do you remember who scored your first goal of the 21/22 season?

Meanwhile, Kalajdzic – who ‘can do crazy things in the air‘ according to Swiss journalist and pundit Marcel Reif – supplied six goals and two assists in 15 appearances across all competitions for Stuttgart in 2021/22, missing 21 matches through fitness and illness issues.

Coupled with the capture of set-piece specialist Christian Eriksen, the giant Austrian could well present a viable alternative option for Ten Hag after the departure of Edinson Cavani as the 52-year-old aims to oversee a rebuild in Manchester.
