Karl Darlow is a candidate to replace Dean Henderson at Manchester United, according to Samuel Luckhurst of The Manchester Evening News.

The lowdown

United allowed Henderson to join newly-promoted Nottingham Forest on loan earlier in the transfer window.

They've yet to recruit a new 'keeper, leaving David de Gea and 36-year-old veteran Tom Heaton as the only senior options.

Darlow may have been nudged down the pecking order at Newcastle following the arrival of Nick Pope, who could compete with Martin Dubravka for the no. 1 spot.

The latest

In a Q&A for The MEN, Luckhurst was asked if he had 'any ideas' about who might be the new 'back up GK' at Old Trafford.

He says Darlow has been mentioned as a contender, as has Watford's Daniel Bachmann, though the latter is now regarded as too expensive.

"Darlow was suggested when Newcastle were keen on Henderson before Burnley got relegated and they plumped for Pope," he said.

"Bachmann was of interest but it's gone quiet as, surprise, surprise, Watford have demanded too much."

The verdict

Darlow would be a decent solution to United's problem.

He has 52 games' worth of experience in the Premier League, which is potentially his main selling point.

Given that he's 31 and Newcastle have other options, you don't imagine he'd be particularly expensive too. Indeed, Transfermarkt value him at just £2.25million.

Former Man. United defender and Newcastle manager Steve Bruce hailed him as 'terrific'.

And Red Devils star Bruno Fernandes will no doubt remember when Darlow saved his penalty in a Premier League clash in October 2020.
