Manchester United continue to be linked with a move for FC Barcelona forward Ansu Fati, however, there appears to be ‘little chance’ of a transfer this summer.

The Lowdown: Fati enquiry made

Fati has a release clause of €1bn (£875m) in his Camp Nou contract, with the 20-year-old contributing to nine goals in 38 appearances in all competitions this season.

He appears to be catching the eye of some clubs in England, including United, who were first linked with signing Fati two years ago after reports of a £134m offer from Old Trafford.

Reports back in February suggested that the Red Devils had already made an enquiry to his agent Jorge Mendes to ‘ask about the player's situation’.

The Latest: Jones’ comments

Writing for GiveMeSport, transfer insider Dean Jones said that United, Liverpool, Arsenal and Newcastle United are all keen on the La Liga star. However, Jones added specifically on the Red Devils that ‘there is little chance of the move’.

‘United’s interest in Fati is indeed long-standing yet, at this moment, there is little chance of the move, sources say. Two years ago they would have run full steam into a deal like this, but times have changed and so have the identity of attacking priorities.’

Jones then said that ‘it is understood Fati does not have a desire himself to seek a move and he may indeed stay’, making any move to Old Trafford an ambitious one.

The Verdict: Striker a priority

Fati appears to be a huge talent, with Barcelona team-mate Eric Garcia labelling him as a player born with 'magic'. However, the Spaniard is primarily a left-winger, a position of the pitch where Marcus Rashford has been excelling under Erik ten Hag in recent months, contributing to 20 goals in 23 games on the left-hand side.

United also have Jadon Sancho, Anthony Elanga and Alejandro Garnacho as left-wing options, therefore, a big-money move for a centre-forward could be more beneficial at Old Trafford, with Anthony Martial potentially on the way out in the summer.

Fati has played just 12 times as a centre-forward during his career, so looking elsewhere for a striker such as Victor Osimhen could be money better spent. The Napoli forward has been in fine form during the current campaign, netting twice on Sunday against Torino to take his tally to 25 goals in 29 games, so could be just what is needed at Old Trafford in the summer instead of bringing in another winger.
