Manchester United: VAR appears to make major penalty blunder

Manchester United: VAR appears to make major penalty blunder - Manchester United News

Footage has emerged showing VAR failing to spot an apparent handball moments before it would’ve fallen to the feet of Manchester United ace Wout Weghorst.

The Lowdown: Man United will feel hard done by

Man United were certainly engulfed in a whole load of controversial decisions on Sunday afternoon with Casemiro being handed his marching orders for the second time this season as the main talking point.

However, it wasn’t the only decision that VAR had to look at as Marcus Rashford also took a tumble in the box despite Gavin Bazunu making no contact with the England international.

While that didn’t look to be a penalty, when the ball struck the arm of Armel Bella-Kotchap while he was on the floor, his heart will have certainly been in his mouth as it certainly did strike his arm.

The Latest: VAR ignores handball appeals

Weghorst’s eyes will have lit up when he saw Bella-Kotchap fall to the floor and the ball was all set to land at his feet, which would’ve given him a golden chance to score at Old Trafford for the first time in the Premier League.

However, the ball was indeed stopped by the Southampton defender’s arm while he was trying to get up from the floor, which left the Dutch international striker livid on the pitch.

The Verdict: Man United angered by VAR

It is quite amazing that VAR didn’t see fit to order Anthony Taylor over to the monitor for the second time in the game, because if Bella-Kotchap’s arm doesn’t stop the ball then Weghorst has an easy chance to score.

Man United and their fans will likely be even angrier with the incident because of what had happened with Casemiro earlier in the match which was seemingly enough to get VAR interested, but when it would’ve benefited them, it doesn’t think so.

Even though VAR didn’t intervene, the image above shows Taylor has a clear view of the incident and should’ve been able to realise on his own that Bell-Kotchap had stopped the ball via an illegal way, so it’s poor from the on-pitch official as well as VAR.

Although, the only thing that perhaps saves him is the fact that it may look like he’s supporting his own weight with both arms.
