Manchester United managerial target Erik ten Hag is seeking assurances over the level of 'power' he would wield at the club, according to Fabrizio Romano

The lowdown

United are seeking a permanent successor to Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, who was dismissed from his post back in November. Ralf Rangnick has taken over until the end of the season, but he has been unable to steer the Red Devils into the Champions League places.

The Telegraph's Jason Burt revealed last week that United are 'closing in' on the appointment of Ajax boss Ten Hag, with things understood to be 'moving fast'.

The latest

Romano took to Twitter on Sunday afternoon to provide a fresh update on where things stand with Ten Hag and the managerial job at Old Trafford.

The journalist outlined: "Erik ten Hag wants to make sure he has enough ‘power’ to decide on the project together with the board, and especially to avoid transfer mistakes. That’s why he’s still in discussions with Man Utd before signing."

The verdict

This is an interesting follow-up from Romano, who on Friday explained what exactly Ten Hag was demanding.

The 52-year-old wants to be '100% involved on present and future transfers strategy', including incomings, outgoings and contract decisions, and he may fear a continuation of United's recruitment woes unless these requests are met.

Indeed, the club have spent in excess of £1bn on transfer fees since Sir Alex Ferguson retired in 2013, but have only won one FA Cup, one League Cup, one Europa League and one Community Shield in that time, a damning indictment of the club's transfer dealings over the past nine years.

In other news, a Sky Sports pundit has dropped this claim on Ten Hag
