Manchester United have been ‘exploring’ the possibility of signing Leicester City midfielder Youri Tielemans, according to Fabrizio Romano.

The Lowdown: Tielemans linked with Man United

The Red Devils have been looking to bring in two midfielders in recent weeks in Christian Eriksen and Frenkie de Jong. A verbal agreement has been reached between United and the Danish free agent, while a fee with Barcelona for the Netherlands international appears to be edging closer.

talkSPORT claimed in recent days that Erik ten Hag is also a big fan of Tielemans, adding that United are on ‘high alert’ with the Belgian entering the final 12 months of his Leicester contract.

The Latest: Romano’s comments

Speaking to GiveMeSport in a story shared on Monday evening, Romano said that United had been ‘exploring’ a move for Tielemans earlier in the year.

The Italian outlined:

“It’s true that Manchester United have been exploring this possibility also months ago.

“It was in February or March when they were exploring the possibilities and the conditions of this Tielemans deal.”

The Verdict: Complete midfield rebuild?

It looks as if Eriksen and De Jong could come to Old Trafford over the coming weeks, and bringing in Tielemans could complete a midfield rebuild under Ten Hag.

Hailed as 'one of Europe's top midfielders' by Foxes manager Brendan Rodgers, the Belgian has 120 games of Premier League experience under his belt and appears to be entering the prime years of his career at the age of 25 and a career-high £49.5m Transfermarkt valuation.

He can play in a variety of midfield roles but is primarily a central midfielder, so he could form a solid partnership alongside De Jong with Eriksen potentially further forward.
