# Manchester United: Diogo Dalot contract talks ongoing

**[Manchester United](https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/manchester-united-news/) are still ‘in talks’ with right-back [Diogo Dalot](https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/tag/diogo-dalot/) over a new-and-improved contract, according to renowned journalist Fabrizio Romano.**

### The Lowdown: Dalot impressing for United

The Portuguese defender has matured into a reliable player for United in recent times, making [13 starts](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/diogo-dalot/leistungsdaten/spieler/357147) in the [Premier League](https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/premier-league-news/) season until that run was interrupted because of an [injury](https://www.mirror.co.uk/sport/football/news/manutd-injuries-dalot-maguire-tuanzebe-28788023) incurred at the [World Cup](https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/world-cup-2022/) last month.

Dalot had been Erik ten Hag’s [undisputed first-choice](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/diogo-dalot/leistungsdaten/spieler/357147) right-back up to that point, and [recent reports](https://www.google.com/url?sa=t&rct=j&q=&esrc=s&source=web&cd=&cad=rja&uact=8&ved=2ahUKEwjyqPv64tr8AhWKdcAKHcG_CUEQFnoECE4QAQ&url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.irishmirror.ie%2Fsport%2Fsoccer%2Fdiogo-dalot-man-utd-contract-28913180&usg=AOvVaw3me4dxPWrSwFWQFxnohYGf) have suggested that a new deal could be in the offing for the 23-year-old.

Romano has now shared an update on the ongoing contract situation, with the club still eager to secure the defender’s future.

### The Latest: Dalot contract talks ongoing

Taking to [Twitter](https://twitter.com/FabrizioRomano/status/1616844141794656256?s=20&t=bQmWzzuGHwAHvDMKE4ZIZQ), the Italian claimed that United are still working on extending Dalot’s stay at Old Trafford, with his current deal [expiring](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/diogo-dalot/profil/spieler/357147) at the end of next season.

Romano tweeted:

> “Man Utd remain in talks to extend Diogo Dalot contract.”

### The Verdict: No-brainer for United

This is a no-brainer for United, considering the level at which Dalot has been performing, averaging [2.7 tackles](https://www.whoscored.com/Players/353418/Show/Diogo-Dalot) per game for Portugal at the 2022 World Cup. For context, [only Casemiro](https://www.whoscored.com/Teams/32/Show/England-Manchester-United) has managed more for the club so far this season.

At 23, he should only get even better, and there is no reason why he can’t become one of the best right-backs in Europe over time, having been [hailed](https://www.manchestereveningnews.co.uk/sport/football/football-news/cristiano-ronaldo-manchester-united-dalot-25535346) as ‘smart’ and ‘intelligent’ by compatriot Cristiano Ronaldo. He also ranks as United’s fourth-best performer in 2022/23 according to [WhoScored](https://www.whoscored.com/Teams/32/Show/England-Manchester-United) metrics.

It would duly be a big blow for United if Dalot were to suddenly move elsewhere should contract talks stall, so they should try to nail down the [£25,000-per-week](https://fbref.com/en/squads/19538871/2022-2023/wages/Manchester-United-Wage-Details) defender’s future as soon as possible, in what would be a significant piece of internal business by the Old Trafford club.
