# Manchester United: Frenkie de Jong wants to stay at Barcelona

**[Manchester United](https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/manchester-united-news/) transfer target Frenkie de Jong is still intent on remaining at Barcelona, according to quotes relayed by journalist Fabrizio Romano.**

### The Lowdown: De Jong links ongoing

Few players have been [linked](https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/manchester-united-news/manchester-united-premier-league-frenkie-de-jong-transfer-news-updates/) with a transfer to the Red Devils more intensely than De Jong this year, with the Dutchman continually tipped for a [Premier League](https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/premier-league-news/) move.

The 25-year-old has remained at Barca for the time being, making [13 appearances](https://www.whoscored.com/Players/279423/Show/Frenkie-de-Jong) in [La Liga](https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/la-liga-news/), although his future there doesn’t necessarily look guaranteed.

A new update has now emerged in that regard, although it isn’t a particularly promising one for United.

### The Latest: De Jong bats off United rumours

Writing on [Twitter](https://twitter.com/FabrizioRomano/status/1597200895842086912?s=20&t=O5HOqylWYOZ9uGmxzA_NEg), Romano relayed quotes from De Jong when quizzed on the Old Trafford links and reaffirmed that the player has no desire to leave Barcelona imminently.

The journalist tweeted:

> ‘Frenkie de Jong when asked about Manchester United deal: “I am at a World Cup tournament so I am not going to talk about club football”.
>
> ‘De Jong has never changed his stance: no intention to leave Barcelona, as things stand.’

### The Verdict: Patience until the summer

It looks increasingly as though a January move for De Jong is off the table, but United certainly shouldn’t lose all hope in terms of a summer move coming to fruition.

The Netherlands international hasn’t always been fully convincing at Barcelona, having been [in and out of](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/frenkie-de-jong/leistungsdaten/spieler/326330) the starting line-up this season, and they could be willing to cash in and earn a huge sum of money for his services.

Indeed, the fact that his contract [expires](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/frenkie-de-jong/profil/spieler/326330) in 2026 puts the La Liga club in an extremely strong bargaining position.

Nonetheless, United should certainly try their hardest to get their man – he has been lauded as ‘[incredible](https://metro.co.uk/2022/06/03/louis-van-gaal-lavishes-praise-on-man-utd-target-frenkie-de-jong-after-win-over-belgium-16767582/)‘ by Louis van Gaal – with his passing brilliance and ability to dictate a game potentially adding another dimension to their play.
