# Manchester United: Harry Maguire free to leave in January

**[Manchester United](https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/manchester-united-news/) captain Harry Maguire will reportedly be allowed to leave the club in January, with a return to Leicester City potentially on the cards.**

### The Lowdown: Maguire out of favour

The 29-year-old’s stock has [fallen dramatically](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/harry-maguire/marktwertverlauf/spieler/177907) over the last couple of years, having produced a consistent run of unconvincing performances for United.

Erik ten Hag has largely frozen Maguire out when both Raphael Varane and Lisandro Martinez are fit, reducing him to just [three](https://www.whoscored.com/Players/99487/Show/Harry-Maguire) starts in the [Premier League](https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/premier-league-news/) this season.

It now looks as though the club’s skipper could even be close to leaving Old Trafford, following a recent claim.

### The Latest: Maguire could leave in January

Taking to [Twitter](https://twitter.com/RudyGaletti/status/1590712399681581056?s=20&t=-dfLvJYWp2ycA8eKESpejg), journalist Rudy Galetti claimed that the door is open for Maguire to depart United in January, with Leicester and other English clubs keen on signing the defender.

Galetti tweeted:

> “#Maguire, as reported, could leave #MUFC soon: #ManUtd have communicated to the player the intention not to continue together.
>
> “Some #EPL clubs are monitoring the situation: keep an eye on #LCFC and 2 other teams.”

### The Verdict: Time to sell

While Maguire has [had some good spells](https://www.manchestereveningnews.co.uk/sport/football/football-news/man-utd-harry-maguire-news-18684170) in a United shirt, he has increasingly proven to be a weak link at the back, with his [lack of pace](https://www.google.ie/url?sa=t&rct=j&q=&esrc=s&source=web&cd=&cad=rja&uact=8&ved=2ahUKEwiR2r69vqb7AhXQVMAKHaogDHEQFnoECBUQAQ&url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.fourfourtwo.com%2Fnews%2Fmanchester-united-harry-maguires-lack-of-pace-a-real-problem&usg=AOvVaw1_ZSM2uWc5Ut3UPuc29wyi) and [positional sense](https://www.google.ie/url?sa=t&rct=j&q=&esrc=s&source=web&cd=&cad=rja&uact=8&ved=2ahUKEwiEptjFvqb7AhWKZ8AKHWviCvEQFnoECAkQAQ&url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.sportbible.com%2Ffootball%2Ffans-stunned-by-harry-maguire-positioning-for-liverpool-goal-20220419&usg=AOvVaw01LnIpFDFMKPfEScOi8Izs) leaving a lot to be desired.

With Ten Hag keen on adopting a [high line](https://www.google.ie/url?sa=t&rct=j&q=&esrc=s&source=web&cd=&cad=rja&uact=8&ved=2ahUKEwiWjLTLvqb7AhUVhFwKHdKrBuYQFnoECC0QAQ&url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.irishmirror.ie%2Fsport%2Fsoccer%2Ften-hag-tactics-man-united-27469488&usg=AOvVaw2eoVlrDgc-5ohuS-TJcvYp), the England international is exposed too often and he simply isn’t the right fit for this United team.

\[freshpress-quiz id=”398302″\]

That’s not to say that Maguire isn’t a good player – he has been lauded as ‘[magnificent](https://www.football365.com/news/erik-ten-hag-hails-magnificent-maguire-great-de-gea-heroics-west-ham)‘ by his manager – but a return to a club like Leicester, or someone of that ilk, could be on the cards moving forward.

Therefore, if the opportunity comes up to sell a player that the club are seemingly happy to let go, it seems like the right time to part ways.
