# Manchester United: Harry Maguire could stay at Old Trafford

**[Manchester United](https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/manchester-united-news/) captain [Harry Maguire](https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/tag/harry-maguire/) could salvage his Old Trafford career after an impressive 2022 [World Cup](https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/world-cup-2022/), according to transfer expert Dean Jones.**

### The Lowdown: Maguire shines at World Cup

The 29-year-old went into the Qatar-hosted tournament in poor form and under pressure, with some questioning his place in Gareth Southgate’s England squad.

Maguire enjoyed a hugely impressive World Cup, however, [starting all five](https://www.whoscored.com/Players/99487/Show/Harry-Maguire) of the Three Lions’ matches and averaging three aerial duel wins per game.

The centre-back’s United career has been in doubt, having lost his place in the starting lineup, but it may be that all hope is not lost for him.

### The Latest: Could stay at United

Speaking to [*Give Me Sport*](https://www.givemesport.com/88094531-manchester-united-transfer-news-old-trafford-career-world-cup), Jones claimed that Maguire’s form in Qatar has boosted his chances of remaining in Erik ten Hag’s plans moving forward:

> “I think we have to consider Harry Maguire’s form at the World Cup and his situation. He’ll be back on the bench when he returns to club football.
>
> “At some stage soon, he will get a game at Man United, though. And from there, there’s a better chance of him salvaging his Man United career with some sort of form in his back pocket now, so I think there’s still a lot to play out before a transfer actually comes to fruition.”

### The Verdict: Big six months

This feels like the most important period in Maguire’s [Premier League](https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/premier-league-news/) career coming up, with the Englishman knowing that he has to take his international form to club level, having been [called](https://www.eurosport.co.uk/football/premier-league/2021-2022/manchester-united-manager-ralf-rangnick-praises-very-valuable-harry-maguire-after-midweek-boos-with-_sto8868261/story.shtml) ‘very valuable’ by Ten Hag.

He has been deservedly dropped after some patchy form, with Raphael Varane and Lisandro Martinez forging a strong pairing, and he will do well to win his place back.

Maguire’s current deal doesn’t [expire](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/harry-maguire/profil/spieler/177907) until 2025, but once next summer arrives, a decision may need to be made and that could depend on how he has performed in the post-World Cup months.
