# Manchester United: Harry Maguire set to start for England vs Iran

**[Manchester United](https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/manchester-united-news/) captain Harry Maguire is set to start for England in their [World Cup](https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/world-cup-2022/) clash with Iran, according to reliable journalist Sami Mokbel.**

### The Lowdown: Maguire’s poor form

The 29-year-old has suffered a torrid time of things at United in the past 18 months or so, [losing his place in the starting line-up](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/harry-maguire/leistungsdatendetails/spieler/177907/plus/0?saison=2022&verein=985&liga=&wettbewerb=&pos=&trainer_id=) and producing some [poor performances](https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/manchester-united-news/adam-crafton-man-utd-fans-groaning-maguire-west-ham/).

It has led to [huge question marks](https://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/football/article-11412091/Alan-Shearer-says-starting-Harry-Maguire-England-World-Cup-HUGE-gamble.html) surrounding Maguire’s place in England’s [World Cup](https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/world-cup-2022/) squad, let alone being named in Gareth Southgate’s strongest XI in Qatar.

As the Three Lions prepare to take on Iran on Monday, a big team news update has emerged.

### The Latest: England start expected

According to [*The Daily Mail*](https://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/football/article-11450235/Bukayo-Saka-set-edge-Phil-Foden-start-Englands-World-Cup-opener-against-Iran.html)‘s Mokbel, Maguire will partner John Stones at the back for the game, with United teammate Luke Shaw also featuring:

> “The England boss is set to keep faith with Harry Maguire in central defence despite his problems at club level. John Stones is expected to play next to Maguire.”

### The Verdict: Massive decision

This is a huge call from Southgate – one that will not only raise eyebrows among United supporters but also fans across the country, given Maguire’s form.

It is a massive show of faith, and while the Red Devils skipper could do well against a team England will be expected to beat based on [FIFA World Rankings](https://www.fifa.com/fifa-world-ranking/men?dateId=id13792), how he eventually handles a better opponent will be the real test.

Maguire has rarely let England down, in fairness, with [three](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/harry-maguire/nationalmannschaft/spieler/177907) goal contributions in the last two major tournaments which has seen England reach the semi-final and final, and he can be effective when his form is good, but there is enormous pressure on him to prove his worth in the coming weeks.
