# Manchester United: Memphis Depay on Red Devils’ ‘wanted list’

**Barcelona and Netherlands attacker Memphis Depay is high up on [Manchester United](https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/manchester-united-news/)‘s ‘wanted list’ in January, according to journalist Pete O’Rourke.**

### The Lowdown: Depay linked with United return

The Dutchman spent two years at Old Trafford between 2015 and 2017, coming in with a big reputation but ultimately struggling to match expectations.

Depay scored just [seven goals](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/memphis-depay/alletore/spieler/167850) in 53 appearances for United, but he has shone for both Lyon and Barcelona in the years since leaving the club, racking up [147](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/memphis-depay/alletore/spieler/167850) direct goal involvements across the two European giants.

That – and a fall down the Barca pecking order this season – has led to the 28-year-old being [linked](https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/manchester-united-news/manchester-united-memphis-depay-barcelona-latest-transfer-news-rumours-updates/) with a return to the Red Devils, as Erik ten Hag looks to bring in attacking quality after the exit of Cristiano Ronaldo.

### The Latest: New update emerges

Speaking to [*Give Me Sport*](https://www.givemesport.com/88099525-manchester-united-memphis-depay-transfer-rumours), O’Rourke confirmed Depay could be United’s new striker, saying the versatile forward is ‘definitely’ going to be high on their list:

> “Again, he can play that number 9 role which he has done for Holland, so he definitely ticks the box on that one.
>
> “He’s probably relatively cheap and available at Barcelona as well, so again that’s another deal that United could do, so I think he’s somebody that will definitely be high on their wanted list.”

### The Verdict: Is he good enough?

Depay could certainly come in and do a decent job for United, considering he has a record of [43 goals in 86 caps](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/memphis-depay/alletore/spieler/167850) for the Netherlands and has been [described](https://www.sportskeeda.com/football/news-an-extraordinary-player-louis-van-gaal-heaps-praise-reported-manchester-united-target) as ‘extraordinary’ by Louis van Gaal.

The question is whether or not United could do better than him, however, considering he turns 29 next month and has already struggled once in the [Premier League](https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/premier-league-news/).

If Ten Hag feels that Depay is the man to lead the line for him then he should be trusted, but there is a feeling that a younger signing with a higher ceiling could make more sense.
