# Manchester United: Harry Maguire up for sale this summer

**[Manchester United](https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/manchester-united-news/) captain [Harry Maguire](https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/tag/harry-maguire/) will be put up for sale by the club during the summer transfer window, according to a fresh rumour.**

### The Lowdown: Maguire down the pecking order

The 30-year-old has suffered a sobering campaign to date, with Erik ten Hag suggesting that Raphael Varane and Lisandro Martinez is his preferred centre-back pairing.

Maguire has only started [five matches](https://www.whoscored.com/Players/99487/Show/Harry-Maguire) in the [Premier League](https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/premier-league-news/) all season long, ahead of this afternoon’s trip to Liverpool.

The Englishman has been [linked](https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/manchester-united-news/manchester-united-premier-league-harry-maguire-transfer-news-updates/) with a move away from Old Trafford, and a new update does little to dampen the chances of an exit happening.

### The Latest: Summer exit expected

According to [*Football Insider*](https://www.footballinsider247.com/sources-man-united-put-harry-maguire-up-for-sale-as-ten-hag-makes-up-his-mind/), United ‘have decided to’ allow Maguire to leave United this summer, as Ten Hag looks to raise some transfer funds.

The defender is thought to be ‘surplus to requirements’ at the club, with the manager not seeing him as an important part of his ‘long-term project’.

### The Verdict: Right time to move on

Maguire has certainly had some good times at United, making [165 appearances](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/harry-maguire/alletore/spieler/177907) and [winning](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/harry-maguire/erfolge/spieler/177907) the EFL Cup last weekend, being [called](https://metro.co.uk/2022/10/31/man-utd-erik-ten-hag-delighted-for-magnificent-harry-maguire-17667011/) ‘magnificent’ by Ten Hag.

The [53-time capped](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/harry-maguire/profil/spieler/177907) England international has been [heavily criticised](https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/63044267) for some of his recent performances however, and has subsequently lost his place in the starting line-up.

United could still be able to get good money for Maguire this summer, though, with lower-ranked Premier League sides sure to be eyeing him up, such as [Aston Villa](https://www.birminghammail.co.uk/sport/football/transfer-news/man-utd-captain-harry-maguire-26230619).

Under Ten Hag, the Red Devils are heading to heights without the skipper, so a summer move makes sense for all parties.
