# Manchester United: Red Devils close to agreeing contract extension with Dean Henderson

**Manchester United are close to agreeing on a new contract extension with young goalkeeper Dean Henderson,** [**according to The Daily Mail.**](https://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/football/article-7278813/Sheffield-United-chase-Dutch-goalkeeper-Michael-Verrips-Chris-Wilder-waits-Dean-Henderson.html)

After rejecting Manchester United’s initial proposal, Henderson is thought to be close to agreeing on a new deal at the club with a return to [Sheffield United](https://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/football/article-7278813/Sheffield-United-chase-Dutch-goalkeeper-Michael-Verrips-Chris-Wilder-waits-Dean-Henderson.html) on loan on the cards.

The 22-year-old spent last season on loan at Sheffield United as he helped the club win promotion back to the [Premier League.](https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/48026965)

After confusion over his future, the Blades reportedly switched their attentions to 25-year-old Dutch goalkeeper [Michael Verrips](https://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/football/article-7278813/Sheffield-United-chase-Dutch-goalkeeper-Michael-Verrips-Chris-Wilder-waits-Dean-Henderson.html) from Mechelen in Belgium.

The links with a new contract for Henderson would seem to suggest a prolonged future at Old Trafford, especially after his [successful loan spell](https://www.manchestereveningnews.co.uk/sport/football/transfer-news/dean-henderson-manchester-united-potential-16440867) at the Premier League newcomers. As well as a new contract for Henderson, [David de Gea](https://www.independent.co.uk/sport/football/premier-league/manchester-united-transfer-news-de-gea-contract-latest-updates-solskjaer-a9006451.html) is thought to be close to signing a new contract himself further adding weight to the reports about the young Henderson returning to [Sheffield United](https://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/football/article-7278813/Sheffield-United-chase-Dutch-goalkeeper-Michael-Verrips-Chris-Wilder-waits-Dean-Henderson.html) on loan next season.

Henderson was a key cog in Chris Wilder’s Sheffield United machine last season, keeping 21 clean sheets in the 46 Championship appearances he made.

With the talent shown by Henderson last season, and the spectacular fall off in form from [de Gea](https://www.skysports.com/football/news/11667/11703131/david-de-geas-form-whats-up-with-manchester-uniteds-goalkeeper), a new contract is exactly what the doctor ordered for Manchester United. The club needs to retain the services of the [England youth international](https://www.thefa.com/news/2019/may/26/england-u21s-squad-named-for-euros-270519), who conceded just [41 goals](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/dean-henderson/leistungsdaten/spieler/258919/plus/0?saison=2018) in 46 Championship games last season, at a rate of just[0.89 per game.](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/dean-henderson/leistungsdaten/spieler/258919/plus/0?saison=2018)

With de Gea reaching the wrong side of 30-years-old, and Henderson still only 22-years-old, keeping the young ‘keeper is a wise decision from Manchester United. The Englishman’s performances last season showed that he has the ability to possibly serve as Manchester United’s number one in the near future.
