# Manchester United: Red Devils fans gush over Patrice Evra’s comments

**Patrice Evra has dropped a bombshell about Sir Alex Ferguson’s transfer targets during his time at Manchester United.**

Evra revealed Ferguson was close to bringing Cristiano Ronaldo back to Old Trafford in 2013, along with his Real Madrid teammate Gareth Bale.

Speaking to [the official UTD Podcast](https://www.manutd.com/en/news/detail/evra-reveals-sir-alex-was-99-per-cent-sure-of-signing-ronaldo-and-bale), the Frenchman noted Sir Alex’s departure was the hardest moment in his career. Evra said: “You know, you talk about the hardest moments \[in my United career\], I would say maybe this is the one. Two weeks before that, I remember there was a lot of media saying Ferguson will maybe retire next year, and he said, ‘Patrice, I will never retire. I will be here another 10 years’.

“He then said: ‘my target is I’m 99 per cent sure we will have Cristiano Ronaldo and Gareth Bale. I just need these two players to win the Champions League again. Ninety-nine per cent.’ And to be fair, when I speak with Cristiano, I ask him and he said yes to the boss, and was coming to join United. He told me this.”

Sadly, a double swoop for Ronaldo and Bale failed to materialise, and the Scotsman retired at the end of that season ([BBC Sport](https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/22447018)).

The 38-year-old went on to talk about a number of hot topics, including Fergie’s retirement, his tough upbringing in Paris, and how he adapted to life in the Premier League for the first time.

After arriving at the Theatre of Dreams from Monaco for [£7.2m](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/patrice-evra/profil/spieler/5285) in 2006, Evra went on to make a staggering [379 appearances](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/patrice-evra/leistungsdatendetails/spieler/5285/verein/985) for United, scoring [10 goals](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/patrice-evra/leistungsdatendetails/spieler/5285/verein/985) and creating [40 assists](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/patrice-evra/leistungsdatendetails/spieler/5285/verein/985) in all competitions, winning the Premier League [five times](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/patrice-evra/erfolge/spieler/5285), and lifting the coveted Champions League trophy [in 2008](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/patrice-evra/erfolge/spieler/5285). The former French international [retired last year](https://www.skysports.com/football/news/11095/11772753/patrice-evra-retires-former-man-united-defender-will-go-down-as-premier-league-great) after a brief stint with English side West Ham United.

Unsurprisingly, loads of United fans gushed over the ex-Red Devil’s “awesome” comments on social media, with one supporter dubbing the star as the “GOAT” and another adding he was a “legendary” player. One fan also labelled him an “idol.”
