# Manchester United: Red Devils handed major blow as Borussia Dortmund give Jadon Sancho update

**Manchester United have been pursuing Jadon Sancho for several years now, and appear to be no further forward.**

The Red Devils have been linked to Sancho ever since Jose Mourinho took charge of [Old Trafford](https://www.manchestereveningnews.co.uk/sport/football/transfer-news/man-united-transfer-news-targets-18434686).

Sancho has told Borussia Dortmund he wants to return to the Premier League, via [ESPN](https://www.espn.co.uk/football/soccer-transfers/story/4108421/chelseaman-united-making-transfer-moves-to-challenge-liverpoolman-city-for-premier-league-title). However, Dortmund remain confident nobody will be able to afford their asking price, as Hans-Joachim Watzke believes clubs are incapable of spending such a huge amount of money at the moment.

Watzke told [Sport1](https://www.sport1.de/): “If Jadon approaches us and says he wants to leave no matter what, which did not happen until now, and a club wants to spend what we demand, we will discuss it.

“But I don’t think there will be a club that pays the fee we want.”

Although [reports](https://www.espn.co.uk/football/soccer-transfers/story/4108421/chelseaman-united-making-transfer-moves-to-challenge-liverpoolman-city-for-premier-league-title) have repeatedly insisted that the Red Devils are leading the race to sign Sancho in the summer, this doesn’t seem to be the case anymore. United have actually started drafting a list of [alternatives](https://www.express.co.uk/sport/football/1297294/Man-Utd-Transfer-News-Cengiz-Under-Gossip-Latest) in the event they miss out on the winger, which may concern some supporters.

The 20-year-old, who is [BVB’s top scorer](https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/teams/borussia-dortmund/top-scorers) this season, netted 19 goals and supplied 18 assists in the Bundesliga, although Lucien Favre’s side still missed out on the coveted [title](https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/53071043).

To make matters worse, [Dortmund](https://www.90min.com/posts/borussia-dortmund-s-humiliating-final-day-defeat-exposes-all-of-their-costly-flaws) suffered a humiliating defeat at home to Hoffenheim on the final day of the season. Nevertheless, the 8-time German champions are optimistic Sancho will stay at the Signal Iduna Park.

Moreover, they are holding out for their [£115m](https://www.thesun.co.uk/sport/football/11885552/man-utd-jadon-sancho-transfer-dortmund-2/) valuation.

[Ed Woodward](https://www.manchestereveningnews.co.uk/sport/football/transfer-news/man-united-transfer-news-targets-18434686) has stressed it is unrealistic to expect the board to splash the cash in the transfer window, as a result of the financial repercussions of the pandemic.

Failure to sign Sancho would be a major blow for Solskjaer, as the club legend has identified him as [his top transfer target](https://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/football/article-8341465/Jadon-Sancho-likely-leave-Dortmund-summer-Man-United-queue.html).

Clubs all over the world are bearing the brunt of the economic impact from the pandemic, and United may be unable to meet Dortmund’s hefty demands.
