# Manchester United: Red Devils leading Darwin Nunez chase

**[Manchester United](https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/manchester-united-news/) are reportedly leading the way in the race to sign Benfica striker Darwin Nunez.**

### The Lowdown: Club-record deal?

Nunez, described as an [‘absolute beast’](https://twitter.com/anfieldindexpro/status/1511710064431837185?s=21&t=U1uOL0YoYex8m5kQqa4xxA) on a Liverpool podcast last month following his display against the Reds, has been heavily linked with a [£109m](https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/manchester-united-news/darwin-nunez-man-utd-transfer-latest-109m/) move to Old Trafford.

Should a transfer in that region go through, the 22-year-old would become United’s [most-expensive](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/manchester-united/transferrekorde/verein/985) signing of all time, eclipsing a £94.5m move for Paul Pogba.

New manager Erik ten Hag recently made an [‘express request’](https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/manchester-united-news/darwin-nunez-man-utd-transfer-latest-109m/) regarding Nunez, and it looks as if CEO Richard Arnold is making progress over a potential deal.

### The Latest: United leading the way

[Sports Witness](https://sportwitness.co.uk/man-united-one-best-placed-clubs-sign-34-goal-forward-ten-hag-prepares-renewal-attack/) relayed an update from [Record](https://record.xl.pt/) on Thursday regarding Nunez and Manchester United.

They claimed that the Red Devils aren’t only ‘attentive’ but are now ‘one of the best-placed clubs’ to sign the striker this summer, especially with [Edinson Cavani](https://www.theguardian.com/football/2022/mar/03/edinson-cavani-set-for-manchester-united-exit-and-targets-la-liga-move#:~:text=Edinson%20Cavani%20is%20set%20to,another%20of%20Europe's%20major%20leagues.) set to leave and [Marcus Rashford](https://www.express.co.uk/sport/football/1605106/Manchester-United-transfer-news-Marcus-Rashford-Arsenal-Newcastle)’s future up in the air.

### The Verdict: Fingers crossed

You can see why Ten Hag would like to bring Nunez to the Premier League this summer. The Uruguayan has scored a whopping [34 goals in 40 games](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/darwin-nunez/leistungsdaten/spieler/546543) in all competitions this season, one of which came against Ten Hag’s Ajax to dump them out of the Champions League.

The Dutchman could have a shortage of attacking options when he arrives at the club, so landing Nunez, who has [played](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/darwin-nunez/leistungsdaten/spieler/546543) as a centre-froward, second striker and left-winger, could prove to be an excellent piece of business both in the short and long term.

It looks as if a mega-money move will be one to keep an eye on when the transfer window opens, with Ten Hag possibly making a special request for Nunez following [reports](https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/manchester-united-news/manchester-united-fabrizio-romano-drops-transfer-plan-update/) suggesting he’ll be making decisions on targets in the coming weeks.
