# Manchester United: Red Devils re-open talks for Juventus star Mario Mandzukic

Manchester United saw a deal to swap Romelu Lukaku for [Paulo Dybala](https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/49230085) fall through last week due to a number of concerns surrounding the Argentine attacker.

The Old Trafford giants have made three signings this summer, with [Aaron Wan-Bissaka, Harry Maguire and Daniel James](https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/49224905) joining the club.

Links with Mandzukic follow Lukaku’s potential exit from Old Trafford today. The Belgian striker is in Italy to complete a deal to join Serie A side Internazionale after Manchester United agreed on a deal worth up to [€80m (roughly £75m)](https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/49263195).

That would leave Ole Gunnar Solskjaer with only Marcus Rashford as the club’s senior option upfront. And the England international’s record means Solskjaer can’t rely on him alone. Rashford [scored just 14 goals and assisted nine in over 45 games last season.](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/marcus-rashford/leistungsdaten/spieler/258923/plus/0?saison=2018)

In comparison, [Mandzukic](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/mario-mandzukic/leistungsdaten/spieler/34572/plus/0?saison=2018) has a stellar record in front of goal and could fit in well in the north-west. The Croatian contributed a good amount of goals last season, [16 in just 30 starts for Juventus in all competitions](https://www.whoscored.com/Players/24088/Show/Mario-Mandzukic).

Mandzukic would be a good option for Solskjaer on a short-term deal, especially with just hours left in the transfer window.

The Croatia international is a tall striker and his statistics show just how useful his height has been. [Mandzukic won 2.9 headers per game on average](https://www.whoscored.com/Players/24088/Show/Mario-Mandzukic) last season, which was the same as Lukaku, [who also won 2.9](https://www.whoscored.com/Teams/32/Archive/England-Manchester-United?stageId=16368) (via WhoScored). Indeed, with four of his nine Serie A goals being scored with his head (as per [Transfermarkt](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/mario-mandzukic/alletore/spieler/34572/plus/0?saison=2018&verein=506&liga=&wettbewerb=&pos=&minute=&pos=&torart=203&stand=)), Mandzukic is undoubtedly a threat in the air.

A Plan B off the bench would be good for Solskjaer, who can’t solely rely on a quick attacking trio like he did versus [Tottenham Hotspur last season, something highlighted by Darren Fletcher.](https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/46859254)

Mandzukic would bring goals and a Plan B if he joins Manchester United, making him the best option in this late stage of the transfer window.
