# Manchester United: These fans reacted with humour to news about Marcos Rojo’s 2014 transfer

**A report by [The Athletic](https://theathletic.com/1292355/2019/10/16/spying-firms-analysis-software-and-a-foundation-of-noodle-deals-inside-manchester-uniteds-recruitment/) has revealed that Manchester United signed Marcos Rojo in 2014 without knowing that he was under criminal investigation at the time.**

According to [The Athletic](https://theathletic.com/1292355/2019/10/16/spying-firms-analysis-software-and-a-foundation-of-noodle-deals-inside-manchester-uniteds-recruitment/), the Old Trafford club only found out about the Argentina defender being under investigation for an alleged bottle attack on two people in his native country when a club employee typed the player’s name into Google after the transfer was completed.

[The Athletic](https://theathletic.com/1292355/2019/10/16/spying-firms-analysis-software-and-a-foundation-of-noodle-deals-inside-manchester-uniteds-recruitment/) added that Manchester United have now decided to employ secret operatives to spy on players that the club are trying to sign, with [@utdreport](https://twitter.com/utdreport/status/1184443680108765185) on Twitter sharing the news.

> [#mufc](https://twitter.com/hashtag/mufc?src=hash&ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw) have started to involve spying firms to investigate players they are trying to sign. This is to try and avoid situations like signing Marcos Rojo in 2014 whilst he was being investigated by police for an alleged bottle attack in Argentina [#mulive](https://twitter.com/hashtag/mulive?src=hash&ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw) \[the athletic\]

[The Athletic](https://theathletic.com/1292355/2019/10/16/spying-firms-analysis-software-and-a-foundation-of-noodle-deals-inside-manchester-uniteds-recruitment/) added that Rojo had faced the possibility of a prison sentence if he was convicted over the alleged bottle attack, but the case was eventually settled out of court.

The story has sparked a humorous reaction from these Manchester United fans on Twitter, with some making James Bond references and others citing the case of Leeds manager Marcelo Bielsa [sending a spy to Derby’s training ground](https://www.theguardian.com/football/2019/jan/11/leeds-derby-championship-match-report) prior to a Championship match last season:
