Manchester United have been informed that they could potentially bring in Ousmane Dembele from Barcelona for a revised fee of around £60m ahead of the Monday transfer deadline.
The Red Devils have been attempting to strengthen their attacking options throughout the window and have been frustrated in their attempts to sign Jadon Sancho from Borussia Dortmund, who are refusing to budge on their valuation of the England international.
That has seen United turn their attention towards Dembele and Barcelona could now be prepared to soften their stance on the 23-year-old as they look to raise funds to bring in former Old Trafford attacker Memphis Depay, as per The Mirror.
Dembele, who is valued at £50.4m by Transfermarkt, arrived at Barcelona for a vast transfer fee but he has seen his time at the club hampered by consistent injury troubles. He has been unable to make as much of an attacking impact as some may have expected of him, with the winger managing just one goal in five league appearances during the 2019/20 season (via Sofascore).
Would Ousmane Dembele be a good signing for Man United?
However, the Frenchman has shown fleeting glimpses of his potential at Barcelona and has shown that he can still be an asset in the final third when fit. That is evidenced by the winger scoring eight goals and registering five assists in 29 appearances in the 2018/19 campaign, as per Sofascore. He also has a World Cup winner’s medal from his participation in France’s triumph in Russia two years ago.
The 23-year-old has struggled over the last few years and perhaps needs a fresh start to rejuvenate his career. Given his injury troubles, it would have been too much of a risk to sign Dembele for anywhere near the £117m fee that Barcelona paid to bring him to Spain. However, with the Spanish giants lowering their valuation, it might just tempt the Red Devils into making a move for him.
While some fans may prefer a move for Sancho, the Red Devils need to ensure that someone arrives at the club to provide attacking reinforcements. A few years ago, the prospect of signing the Frenchman would have been exciting and he still has plenty to offer and would arrive with a point to prove.
