Brandon Williams – his career so far
Brandon Williams is a local kid who has already made it on the top level and is now a fully-fledged first-team player at Manchester United under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer. But the 19-year-old defender had to go through thick and thin to get where he is right now and it was only his determination, work rate and incredible talent that ensured he would make it.
Williams clawed his way through the youth ranks at the Man United academy, featuring and impressing at all levels before finally making his U18 squad debut as a substitute for the final minutes of the 4-2 defeat to Reading in the final league game in the 2016/17 season.
And that was a start of something truly brilliant as the now 19-year-old became a regular presence for the young Red Devils’ squad the following campaign, registering 22 appearances across domestic competitions as well as in the UEFA Youth League.
But his progress and development didn’t stop there either and he continued improving and adding value to an already established young side. In April 2018, he got his first reward as he penned a new contract with Man United, even captaining the side under Neil Ryan on a couple of occasions.
Williams’ first exposure to the first team arrived when he was drafted into the senior squad for the Champions League victory at Paris Saint-Germain but he ended up being discarded before the kick-off.
He would go on to tally 38 appearances for the U18s, scoring three goals and assisting further seven before moving to the U23 squad, registering only eight games but bagging a total of five assists in that short period of time.
Williams was given his senior Man United debut at Old Trafford during the Carabao Cup tie against Rochdale on 25 September 2019. From then onward, he managed to work his way into the first-team side and scored his first Premier League goal in the 3-3 draw with Sheffield United in November 2019.
Since then, he mustered a total of 26 games for the seniors, scoring once and assisting further two goals in the process as well and has never looked back.
Williams’ progress into the senior team was definitely the biggest Manchester United news to come out of the camp recently. The young land managed to impress the right people and his commitment to the cause and great performances warranted him a regular place in the first-team squad.
And not only that but some of the latest transfer rumours suggest that the Red Devils have called off their search for a new left-back simply because they have so much faith in the youngster. This would indeed indicate his future at Old Trafford is safe for time being.
Of course, there’s still a long way to go for Williams and his current contract does expire in 2022 so it will be interesting to see if there are any transfer news on that front as we approach the summer window.
Despite still being so young, Williams is slowly but surely turning into a versatile defender who can add both defensive and attacking value to the team due to his sheer power and determination.
The 19-year-old left-back can boast with a lot of energy and exceptional work rate that ensures he can run across the pitch, supporting all phases of Man United’s play, covering in defence and adding an extra edge in attack.
When he goes forward, he can either underlap or overlap, connecting well with the respective winger on that side. Williams also has the tendency to cut inside and threaten through the central channels when necessary and possible.
Even though he has been seen as a more industrious option at times, the youngster can showcase the aggression the Red Devils may be missing in their lineup and can force turnovers and interceptions as well.
