Manchester United have reportedly held transfer talks with Napoli striker Arkadiusz Milik, who is also wanted by a previous Old Trafford manager.
The Daily Express reported that the Red Devils have been in discussions with the Poland international, with his current club looking to offload the 26-year-old, who supported United as a boy. Jose Mourinho also wants to sign the striker as a backup to Harry Kane at Tottenham.
Milik, who is valued at £28.8m by TransferMarkt, has dropped down the pecking order at Napoli under Gennaro Gattuso but still has a commendable scoring record, with a combined 95 goals for them and previous club Ajax. He has also netted 14 times in 51 appearances for his native Poland.
Last season he found the net 14 times in 2,109 minutes for the Serie A side, with an average of one goal every 150.64 minutes. That is a better scoring ratio than what United centre-forward Anthony Martial managed, as despite the Frenchman hitting 23 goals, he did so in 3,566 minutes, which works out at one goal per 155.04 minutes.
While Marcus Rashford and Mason Greenwood can also play at centre-forward, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer tends to deploy them mainly in wide attacking roles, which would leave Martial as the player most likely to be threatened by the possible arrival of Milik at Old Trafford.
With Donny van de Beek still the only signing made in this transfer window and just a week left until the deadline, Manchester United could certainly do a lot worse than bringing in Milik.
Do you think Man Utd will sign Milik before the end of the transfer window?
Having scored 66 league goals last season but leaked 36, along with conceding five in their first two league games this term, perhaps defenders ought to be the club’s priority rather than centre-forwards. However, Milik has an impressive goals-per-minute ratio, is proven in a major European league (38 Serie A goals) and should placate some of the fans’ unrest over the lack of incomings so far in this window.
Man United fans, do you think Milik would be an upgrade on Martial at centre-forward? Join in the discussion by commenting below!
