Manchester United seem to be very keen on bringing a defender to Old Trafford and they have been linked with Sergio Reguilon.
However, there seems to be one factor which is holding up the deal and both United and Real Madrid will need to come to an agreement sooner rather than later if a transfer is going to happen.
Therefore, for now a transfer seems to be a long way away as Ole Gunnar Solskjaer does not want to sign a player who could go back to Real Madrid whenever the Spanish club decide.
If you compare Reguilon to current Man United left-backs Luke Shaw and Brandon Williams, the Spaniard, who was on loan at Sevilla last season, picked up two goals and four assists; Shaw got none whilst Williams scored one goal, via WhoScored. Defensively, Reguilon has managed on average 1.8 tackles and 1.1 interceptions per game, which was better than both Williams and Shaw.
He is 23 years old and helped Sevilla to win the Europa League last season. This, along with him outperforming Shaw and Williams for key metrics, suggests that he would be an upgrade on that duo and the Red Devils would be able to pick up a good transfer if they can bring Reguilon to Old Trafford.
However, it would only be a good deal if there is no buy-back clause as he is still young and the fact that Madrid want to put this clause into the deal highlights that they still believe he has the potential to succeed at the Bernaeu.
It could cause issues as the buy-back clause may be triggered at any moment and therefore would not help solve United’s issue of finding a long-term solution at left-back.
