Manchester United have confirmed that nine of their academy players will be released next week when their contracts expire.
The Red Devils announced that, as per Manchester Evening News, Demetri Mitchell, Cameron Borthwick-Jackson, Ethan Hamilton, Dion McGhee, Largie Ramazani, George Tanner, Aidan Barlow, Kieran O’Hara and Alex Fojticek will all leave Old Trafford at the end of June.
However, there is one notable absentee from the list. Angel Gomes was not included and this could lead to lots of gossip on social media. The wonderkid, who has been linked with Chelsea in recent months, is also out of contract next week.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer insisted that a deal is “not too far away” earlier this month, despite the fact that Man United have been unable to agree terms with Gomes so far, as his representatives were reportedly ‘underwhelmed‘ by the club’s initial offer.
Last month, the Premier League revealed that clubs will be allowed to offer extensions to players with contracts expiring in June. United are determined to keep a hold of the 19-year-old and have submitted a new long-term deal to his agents.
The transfer saga has dragged on for a long time now, amid interest from the Blues and Barcelona. Although Barca were interested in signing the teenager, they had no plans of giving him first-team football, which is understood to have disappointed the youngster.
While this is purely speculation, the fact of the matter remains that Gomes is still a United player. Even if negotiations run down to the 11th hour, no news is good news at this stage in the game.
