A number of Manchester United supporters have been bemoaning the club’s transfer policy as reports emerged that the Red Devils decided to pursue Edinson Cavani after being denied the chance to sign Real Madrid’s Luka Jovic.
United were interested in making a potential move for Jovic but the Spanish club’s decision to allow Borja Mayoral to leave the Bernabeu has meant that they will not allow the Serbian to leave the club this window. That has seen the Red Devils turn their attention to Cavani as an alternative to boost their attacking options, as per journalist Gianluca Di Mazrio.
Jovic only moved to Real Madrid in the summer of 2019 on the back of an excellent campaign with Eintracht Frankfurt when he registered an impressive tally of 17 goals in 32 Bundesliga appearances in 2018/19, as per Sofascore. However, the 22-year-old only managed to make 17 league appearances and just four starts in his first campaign in the Spanish capital (via Transfermarkt).
The Serbia international has started the current campaign more involved in Real Madrid’s line-up, making two appearances already alongside Karim Benzema in attack. The Spanish giants have already allowed a host of players to leave the club in this window as they look to balance the books, so they will need Jovic around their squad.
The Red Devils are seeking some attacking reinforcements and, after missing out on Jovic, they now appear to be closing in on a deal for Cavani after the 33-year-old left PSG this summer. One United fan pointed out the difference in age between the pair, while others bemoaned the fact they had missed out on a quality arrival in the shape of Jovic and slammed club executive Ed Woodward.
