Manchester United have opened initial talks with Barcelona over a potential loan move for Ousmane Dembele, with the Red Devils not wanting a permanent deal for the winger, but open to a loan with an option to buy, according to Italian journalist Fabrizio Romano.
Dembele could potentially offer Manchester United an alternative to Borussia Dortmund’s Jadon Sancho, with the Red Devils having been so far frustrated in their attempts to sign the England international. Ole Gunnar Solskjær is keen to add to his attacking options before the window closes with time running out to secure any deals.
The 23-year-old’s reputation has somewhat declined over the last few campaigns since he made the switch to Barcelona from Borussia Dortmund, with Dembele only having managed to make nine appearances for the Spanish giants last term across La Liga and the UEFA Champions League (via Transfermarkt).
Would Ousmane Dembele be a good signing for Man United?
Dembele’s main issue over recent years has been his consistent injury troubles, and the France international needs to put those problems behind him and get a full campaign of regular first team football under his belt. That is why moving to Manchester United for the season on loan could be highly beneficial for the attacker.
The flying winger did show in the 2018/19 season that when fit and firing he can be a real asset to his side, with the Frenchman registering 14 goals and eight assists across all competitions for Barcelona in that campaign (via Transfermarkt).
Therefore, with Manchester United struggling to complete a deal for Sancho at the moment, bringing Dembele in for the campaign would at least provide another quality option for Solskjær to call upon. The move would only see there be an option to buy and not an obligation to buy so it would be a risk-free addition in the long-term.
So, with time running out in the window it will be interesting to see if United do make the move for Dembele, or put all their efforts into getting Sancho out of Dortmund.
