# Manchester United: Wout Weghorst signing is ‘very close’

**[Manchester United](https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/manchester-united-news/) are ‘very close’ to signing Wout Weghorst, according to [Foot Mercato](https://www.footmercato.net/a5860048547803511974-manchester-united-sur-le-point-de-soffrir-wout-weghorst) journalist [Lucas Billard](https://twitter.com/LucasBillard6/status/1611778247158648835).**

### The Lowdown: New forward wanted

Erik ten Hag has [admitted](https://www.manutd.com/en/news/detail/erik-ten-hag-confirms-striker-hunt-after-cristiano-ronaldo-exit) that the Red Devils are in the market for a new striker following Cristiano Ronaldo’s departure in November. A number of attacking players have been linked with making the move to Old Trafford, including Weghorst.

Described as [‘crazy’](https://www.bundesliga.com/en/bundesliga/news/who-is-wout-weghorst-wolfsburg-s-next-edin-dzeko-bas-dost-holland-striker-3276) by former Wolfsburg team-mate Admir Mehmedi, the Netherlands international is still on the books at Burnley but is currently on loan with Turkish outfit Besiktas, where has scored [nine](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/wout-weghorst/leistungsdaten/spieler/228645) times and registered [four](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/wout-weghorst/leistungsdaten/spieler/228645) assists in [18](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/wout-weghorst/leistungsdaten/spieler/228645) games.

### The Latest: Weghorst to Man Utd update

[Billard](https://twitter.com/LucasBillard6/status/1611778247158648835) took to Twitter on Saturday evening to share a report from [Foot Mercato](https://www.footmercato.net/a5860048547803511974-manchester-united-sur-le-point-de-soffrir-wout-weghorst) outlining what he knows about Weghorst and a potential move to Old Trafford.

He said that the Red Devils are ‘very close’ to registering the forward’s arrival, while [Fabrizio Romano](https://twitter.com/FabrizioRomano/status/1611806574137196545) has stated that the player has given the green light to a transfer.

### The Verdict: Smart move?

Weghorst could be a shrewd signing in the short-term for United and would give Ten Hag another much-needed centre-forward option alongside [Anthony Martial](https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/tag/anthony-martial/).

The 30-year-old stands at [6 foot 5](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/wout-weghorst/profil/spieler/228645) and recently produced heroics on the biggest stage at the World Cup, scoring twice against eventual winners Argentina.

The second of those goals, which came from a [well-worked free kick](https://www.bbc.com/sport/live/football/61047818) in the 11th minute of stoppage time to make it 2-2, saw him hailed as Netherlands’ “[saviour](https://twitter.com/robgreenwood1/status/1601322803487088640?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw%7Ctwcamp%5Etweetembed%7Ctwterm%5E1601322803487088640%7Ctwgr%5Eff381805896269876ae58903c07eaf6219d082c5%7Ctwcon%5Es1_&ref_url=https%3A%2F%2Fd-40200432581697621360.ampproject.net%2F2212151632002%2Fframe.html)” by News Corp Australia’s Rob Greenwood.

United have a busy second half of the season as they are still involved in four competitions, so bringing in an experienced player like Weghorst could make sense.
