# Liverpool: Mason Mount ‘could fit into that Wijnaldum role’ at Anfield

**[Liverpool](https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/liverpool-fc-news/) target [Mason Mount](https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/tag/mason-mount/) ‘could fit into that Wijnaldum role’ should he make the move to Anfield, according to talkSPORT pundit [Gabby Agbonlahor](https://icdb.tv/stats/6750/Gabby-Agbonlahor).**

### The Lowdown: Mount keen to join

The [Daily Mail](https://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/football/article-11470769/AHEAD-GAME-Mason-Mount-rejects-200-000-week-contract-Chelsea.html) claimed in November that the [Premier League](https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/premier-league-news/) playmaker has rejected a new contract offer to extend his stay at Stamford Bridge, leaving his future in the capital uncertain.

The Reds are [reportedly](https://www.footballinsider247.com/mason-mount-is-huge-jurgen-klopp-admirer-as-liverpool-eye-summer-move-sources/) interested in striking a deal for the 24-year-old, who is a big admirer of [Jurgen Klopp](https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/tag/jurgen-klopp/) and would be keen on the switch to Merseyside.

Stan Collymore also exclusively told [CaughtOffside](https://www.caughtoffside.com/2023/03/03/exclusive-liverpool-and-chelsea-discussing-summer-deal-for-mason-mount/) that both clubs are already in direct contact regarding a deal, so this could be one to watch in the months ahead.

### The Latest: Agbonlahor reacts

Speaking to [Football Insider](https://www.footballinsider247.com/agbonlahor-in-no-doubt-about-liverpool-signing-next-wijnaldum-i-keep-hearing-this/), Agbonlahor was asked if he could see Mount joining Manchester United having been [identified](https://www.theguardian.com/football/2023/mar/09/mason-mount-jude-bellingham-harry-kane-manchester-united-summer-target-list) as a target by Erik Ten Hag, to which he replied:

“I don’t think so at all.

“I keep hearing this – Mason Mount to Man United. The only club that could do with him, and could get him, is Liverpool – he could fit into that Wijnaldum role.

“They need a couple of quality midfielders because they are working with a blank canvas.

“You can put him next to Jude Bellingham.”

### The Verdict: No-brainer

Mount has been [hailed](https://twitter.com/ftalentscout/status/1386023819337510914?s=46&t=cVYwodEwJ5KqH22eIl4UYA) a midfield ‘leader’ by talent scout [Jacek Kulig](https://twitter.com/FTalentScout) and should the opportunity to sign him arise, Liverpool have a no-brainer of a decision to make.

The England international has posted [70](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/mason-mount/leistungsdatenverein/spieler/346483) goal contributions in 192 Blues appearances, where he currently ranks in the [93rd](https://fbref.com/en/players/9674002f/Mason-Mount) percentile for most progressive passes.

The [Nike-sponsored](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/mason-mount/profil/spieler/346483) star also has the ability to operate in [seven](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/mason-mount/leistungsdatendetails/spieler/346483) different positions across the field, making him a useful option for Klopp to have in the building.

Finally, Mount will know what it takes to be successful having secured [three](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/mason-mount/erfolge/spieler/346483) senior trophies in the capital, so has the same kind of winning mentality that is already built into the current squad.
