# Newcastle United: David Ornstein deals blow to hopes of signing Arsenal ace Rob Holding

**David Ornstein has dealt a rather big blow to Newcastle United’s hopes of signing Rob Holding as the Arsenal transfer guru confirmed in a [tweet](https://twitter.com/David_Ornstein/status/1303592768233779201) that Mikel Arteta has made it clear that he wants him as an option in the centre of defence this season.**

Indeed, the 24-year-old could even be in line for a start away at Craven Cottage against Scott Parker’s Fulham on Saturday in the first game of the new Premier League season.

Ornstein had [claimed](https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/newcastle-united-transfer-rumours/newcastle-united-david-ornstein-claims-arsenal-ace-rob-holding-is-close-to-signing-on-loan/) just over a week ago now that Holding was close to signing for Steve Bruce’s team on loan for the 2020/21 campaign, but now it seems that any hopes of that happening are put to bed for now.

> Irrespective of David Luiz injury Mikel Arteta has made clear he wants Rob Holding as a centre-back option this season & the 24yo is now expected to stay at Arsenal rather than join Newcastle on loan. It is a bit of a blow to the Tyneside club considering what Holding could have offered at St James’ Park. The 24-year-old is relatively experienced in the Premier League, having played in 39 matches in total over the last four seasons, as per [Transfermarkt](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/rob-holding/leistungsdatendetails/spieler/253341/plus/0?saison=&verein=&liga=&wettbewerb=GB1&pos=&trainer_id=).

Holding has also [won](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/rob-holding/erfolge/spieler/253341) the FA Cup and Community Shield , including most recently being part of the Arsenal side that beat Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool 5-4 on penalties in the latter after Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang’s fine first half goal was cancelled out by Japanese winger Takumi Minamino.

His winning mentality may be useful in the northeast as Newcastle look to rack up enough points to have a strong Premier League season in 2020/21.

However, it looks as if the English defender will not be moving to the Magpies after all, and so the Toon will now have to pursue other targets in his position in the transfer market.
