# Newcastle: Portuguese newspaper makes Diogo Costa claim

**[Newcastle United](https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/newcastle-united-news/) are interested in signing FC Porto goalkeeper Diogo Costa, according to a report from Portuguese newspaper[Jornal de Notícias](https://jn.pt/) (via [Sport Witness](https://sportwitness.co.uk/newcastle-interested-signing-portuguese-league-magpies-can-really-advance-transfer/)).**

### The lowdown: Rising star

Brought up in the famed Porto academy, Costa has already made [146 appearances](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/diogo-costa/leistungsdatenverein/spieler/357153) across all levels for the Portuguese giants despite his tender years.

Only 22-years-old, the fully-fledged senior Portugal international made a first-team debut in 2019 against Boavista and has since amassed [68 senior outings](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/diogo-costa/leistungsdatendetails/spieler/357153/verein/720) for the illustrious club.

Under contract until 2026 ([Transfermarkt](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/diogo-costa/profil/spieler/357153)), Newcastle could now be preparing an audacious attempt to bring the young stopper to the Premier League.

### The latest: Magpies interested

As per [Jornal de Notícias](https://jn.pt/), translated by [SW](https://sportwitness.co.uk/newcastle-interested-signing-portuguese-league-magpies-can-really-advance-transfer/), Newcastle are ready to ‘really advance for the signing’ this summer.

It’s claimed that officials at St James’ Park have Costa ‘very well referenced’, having been attentive to the three-cap star’s talents for some time.

Possessing a €60million (£51million) release clause, it’s believed newly appointed transfer chief Dan Ashworth would need to bid at least €40million (£31million) for Porto to even consider a sale of the goalkeeper hailed by journalist Zach Lowy for a [‘superb’](https://twitter.com/ZachLowy/status/1523026844328595456) display against Benfica.

### The verdict: Make it happen

After previously nailed on number one choice Martin Dubravka succumbed to a series of [regular lengthy injury absences,](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/martin-dubravka/verletzungen/spieler/74960) the gloves have been somewhat of a poisoned chalice at Newcastle.

Karl Darlow took over the mantle for a short period but inconsistent performances soon led Dubravka back into the fold under Eddie Howe. Aged 33 and 31 respectively, it’s no surprise that Howe would be looking for a long-term alternative to both Dubravka and Darlow.

Overall during 2021/22, Costa kept 15 clean sheets and saved 69.7 per cent of the shots taken against him ([Fbref](https://fbref.com/en/players/93fffbcf/Diogo-Costa#all_similar)), higher than Dubravka’s [67.9](https://fbref.com/en/players/3a949a25/Martin-Dubravka) and Darlow’s [64.9](https://fbref.com/en/players/cde3309f/Karl-Darlow) for the same statistic.

Holding a [market value](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/diogo-costa/marktwertverlauf/spieler/357153) of £22.5million, signing the talented Portuguese ‘keeper for anything close to the mooted asking price would be a big expenditure but perhaps one to truly kickstart Ashworth’s plans.
