# Newcastle: Magpies offered Eric Bailly

**Newcastle United have been given the chance to sign Manchester United defender Eric Bailly, according to [The Daily Mirror](https://www.mirror.co.uk/sport/football/transfer-news/man-utd-baily-newcastle-transfer-27274013).**

### The lowdown

As Newcastle look to strengthen at centre-back, [Eddie Howe’s priority](https://www.mirror.co.uk/sport/football/transfer-news/man-utd-baily-newcastle-transfer-27274013) is Lille’s Sven Botman.

But their pursuit is dragging on, with [Botman leaning towards](https://www.mirror.co.uk/sport/football/transfer-news/man-utd-baily-newcastle-transfer-27274013) a move to Serie A champions AC Milan instead.

Man. United paid [£34.2million](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/eric-bailly/profil/spieler/286384) to sign Bailly from Villarreal back in 2016, and he’s gone on to make [113 appearances](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/eric-bailly/leistungsdatenverein/spieler/286384) for the club.

But the Ivorian, who’s [under contract for another two years](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/eric-bailly/leistungsdaten/spieler/286384), [only started three Premier League matches](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/eric-bailly/leistungsdaten/spieler/286384) in 2021/22.

### The latest

Journalist Clive Hetherington writes that the Magpies [have been offered Bailly](https://www.mirror.co.uk/sport/football/transfer-news/man-utd-baily-newcastle-transfer-27274013) as an alternative to Botman.

The club are in the process of considering other options, and will now have to decide whether to pursue a move for the Ivorian.

‘It has been suggested’ that the Red Devils may consider a sale for as little as £8.5million, but a source close to the player’s camp says their demands are actually in the region of £20million.

### The verdict

Is Bailly a good option for Newcastle?

Well, he is something of an unconventional defender, [drawing comparisons to Spiderman](https://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/football/article-10292009/Eric-Bailly-channels-SPIDERMAN-Manchester-Uniteds-draw-Young-Boys.html) for the techniques he used during a Champions League match against Young Boys last December.

But he would bring a certain pedigree, having earned a place in the IFFHS African [Team of the Decade](https://www.iffhs.com/index.php/posts/926) for 2011 to 2020.

\[freshpress-poll id=”398218″\]

But there have to be concerns over his availability, particularly if he retains his [£87,000-per-week](https://salarysport.com/football/premier-league/manchester-united-f.c./) salary.

Bailly has encountered [a succession of injury issues](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/eric-bailly/verletzungen/spieler/286384) over his six-year stay in Manchester, including two problems that sidelined him for more than 100 days apiece.
