# Newcastle set to seal deal for talented Championship ace as Benitez revolution continues

**Newcastle United fans in the Football Transfer Tavern have watched their club lure and [obtain over £33 million worth of fresh faces so far](https://www.shieldsgazette.com/sport/newcastle-united/latest-nufc-news/defender-undergoing-medical-ahead-of-5m-newcastle-move-1-8046206?) this transfer window, and are hoping that the efforts will be enough to gain automatic promotion back to the Premier League.**

And the [Shield Gazette](https://www.shieldsgazette.com/sport/newcastle-united/latest-nufc-news/defender-undergoing-medical-ahead-of-5m-newcastle-move-1-8046206?) reports today that Rafa Benitez has activated the release clause of Aston Villa defender Ciaran Clark, as the tyne-siders look to reinforce their back line ahead of the new season.

The 26-year-old has four years left on his current contract but is now set to link up in the North-East next week.

Our landlord here in the Transfer Tavern think this would be a fantastic acquisition for Benitez and his team, and think Grant Hanley and Ciaran Clark would be a formidable centre-back pairing.

A handful of Villa supporting punters are annoyed at this news, and don’t think the club should be selling to one of their main rivals for promotion next season.

**Newcastle fans….. Happy with the signing of Clark? Will he enhance your backline? Let us know below!**
