# Newcastle: Toon considered move for Brentford forward Benrahma in summer

**Newcastle United considered making a move to sign Brentford forward Said Benrahma in the summer, and could revisit their position in January, according to [The Shields Gazette](https://www.shieldsgazette.com/sport/football/newcastle-united/the-nine-players-newcastle-united-could-target-in-january-including-two-championship-stars-and-a-czech-republic-international-541412?page=2).**

It is suggested the Magpies are keen to sign the best players from outside the Premier League, in the hopes that acquiring talent from elsewhere will see the North East outfit find a better value for their money.

Benrahma enjoyed a tremendous campaign at Griffin Park last season under the tutelage of Bees boss Thomas Frank, who brought the Algerian to the [Championship](https://www.whoscored.com/Regions/252/Tournaments/7/Seasons/7379/Stages/16389/PlayerStatistics/England-Championship-2018-2019) in 2018 from boyhood side OGC Nice for less than £5million ([TEAMtalk](https://www.teamtalk.com/news/exclusive-brentford-want-30m-for-star-amid-arsenal-spurs-interest)).

The 24-year-old would feature 49 times for his new side last season – starting 35 games – in which he scored 11 goals and was credited with 17 assists across all competitions ([TransferMarkt](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/said-benrahma/leistungsdatenverein/spieler/290532)), enough to rank top for goals created in the second-tier.

His efforts also saw Brentford place a staggering £30million asking price on him ([TEAMtalk](https://www.teamtalk.com/news/exclusive-brentford-want-30m-for-star-amid-arsenal-spurs-interest)), after a host of Premier League sides including Arsenal, Tottenham and West Ham began to closely monitor the Ain Temouchent-born winger’s progress, while Borussia Dortmund and AC Milan were also linked.

Brentford have produced a range of young talents to have made it to the Premier League ([TransferMarkt](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/fc-brentford/jugendarbeit/verein/1148)), with AFC Bournemouth’s Chris Mepham one of the most recent, while Watford striker [Andre Gray](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/andre-gray/profil/spieler/120565) secured his move to Burnley after a year at Griffin Park.

Benrahma, a two-time Algeria international, had loan spells with French sides SCO Angers, GFC Ajaccio and LB Chateauroux before leaving Nice, for whom he played 18 senior games for.

Newcastle showing an interest in Benrahma after a season like his in the Championship is hardly surprising, especially given the Magpies parted ways with Ayoze Perez in the summer – a forward who scored the most goals and played the second-most key passes for them in the league last season ([WhoScored](https://www.whoscored.com/Teams/23/Archive/England-Newcastle-United)).

It is also hardly surprising that the Toon decided to look elsewhere and ultimately landed the services of another OGC Nice product, Allan Saint-Maximin, who cost the St. James’ Park natives close to half what Brentford were believed to have been asking for at £16.5m ([BBC](https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/49211377)).

If Saint-Maximin and Miguel Almiron have not helped form a revitalised offence come the turn of the year, then Steve Bruce may have to look at further signings, but there are probably cheaper alternatives to Benrahma – Newcastle were also interested in Hull City’s Jarrod Bowen, who was available for £20m ([Chronicle](https://twitter.com/lee_ryder/status/1155163701214883843)).
