# Newcastle United: Dwight Gayle tipped for new deal by Noel Whelan

**Newcastle United have been tipped to give Dwight Gayle a brand new deal by former Leeds United striker Noel Whelan.**

The former Crystal Palace ace only has a few months left on his current contract at St. James’ Park, with [speculation](https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/newcastle-united-news/newcastle-united-nufc-may-lose-six-players-in-january-including-dwight-gayle/) that he may be sold in the January transfer window or reach a pre-contract agreement with another club.

However, speaking to [Football Insider](https://www.footballinsider247.com/amazing-exclusive-newcastle-backed-to-agree-new-contract-by-pundit-after-big-jan-reveal/), Whelan has backed the Tyneside club to offer him a new deal in order to prolong his stay in the North East:

*“Gayle deserves a new contract and I think he will get one because he is a natural goal scorer. That is what you get with him.*

*“He nearly got a goal before he scored that amazing header and it was amazing – there is no doubt about that. A fantastic cross but he still had lots to do. He was unsighted but the contact was perfect.*

*“The fact that he has been out for a long time, he looked really sharp at the weekend. He was getting on the ball, holding it up and you do not get too many goal scorers like Dwight Gayle.*

*“What a weapon to have on the bench right now. There is no harm in offering him an extra year of year and a half on a contract to keep him at the club.*

*“Give him that opportunity because he has been injured. It would be wrong not to give him the opportunity to showcase what he can do in the Premier League.”*

### Gayle has proven himself in the Premier League

Gayle has proven that he can do it in the top flight, having scored a total of 26 goals and made a further six assists in 126 games in all competitions for both the Eagles and the Magpies over six terms ([Transfermarkt](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/dwight-gayle/leistungsdatendetails/spieler/196522/plus/0?saison=&verein=&liga=&wettbewerb=GB1&pos=&trainer_id=)).

The 30 year-old even scored the winner against West Brom in England’s highest division most recently to earn his team all three points, a goal which was lauded by Toon legend Alan Shearer on [Twitter](https://twitter.com/alanshearer/status/1337803964381851649).

Nonetheless, Gayle is a player that Steve Bruce would surely like to keep in his squad, given his pedigree in the EPL added to the fact that he could be a very handy back-up option to Callum Wilson if the latter is misfiring in front of goal or is out injured for a long period of time.
