# Newcastle United: Fans launch scathing attack on Dwight Gayle after Burnley defeat

**Following a loss to [Burnley at the weekend](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I5D8YHzxNOA&feature=onebox) which ends their three-game unbeaten streak since early December, supporters have gone in on Newcastle United forward Dwight Gayle for missing a great chance to level proceedings in the dying minutes – potentially highlighting their lack of depth going forward.**

Indeed, [it was a miss talked about at length](https://www.shieldsgazette.com/sport/football/newcastle-united/steve-bruce-gives-his-view-dwight-gayle-miss-1341692) by the manager himself.

The defeat will come as a sobering reminder for some critics of the Magpies’ season so far, with supporters seemingly on cloud nine following a great start to the last month of the year, but clearly there are issues still to address in the forward positions – especially when you consider most of Newcastle’s goals in the last few games have [come from defence or midfield.](https://www.nufc.co.uk/matches/first-team/)

Joelinton, who has bagged[just one goal](https://www.whoscored.com/Players/201755/Show/Joelinton) all season so far for Steve Bruce’s side, is the [usual figure of criticism](https://www.chroniclelive.co.uk/sport/football/football-news/steve-bruce-responds-criticism-joelinton-17385978) when addressing the issues surrounding their lack of goalscoring prowess in the forward positions – but after their defeat at Turf Moor, supporters have slammed Gayle for his miss.

Here’s what they had to say on Twitter.

> Because he’s hopeless. Tried to get rid of him but he’s still getting a game. Shows the desperation when we have 1 or 2 injuries

> I’m pretty sure it would have been ruled out for a push by Joelinton via VAR. Nevertheless it was harder to miss.

> He’s a championship player NOT a premier league player. He lacks lots in his game

> Should of scored for sure, but it’s the first time in weeks one of our ’strikers’ has got into that sort of poaching position.
