# Newcastle United: Fans pay tribute to Gary Speed on eight-year anniversary of passing

**Gary Speed was a cult hero among many Newcastle United supporters, becoming a mainstay during one of their most successful eras in the Premier League and the top flight as a whole, amassing [262 appearances](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/gary-speed/leistungsdatenverein/spieler/3459) on Tyneside and scoring 34 goals from midfield.**

Speed, who also played an integral role for his native Wales on the international stage during his career, was awarded the international job as manager [before his death in late 2011](https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-wales-15909277) – prompting tributes from all over the footballing world and sending shockwaves through Britain.

Perhaps the most devastated section of Speed fans belonged on Tyneside, where the Geordie faithful grew attached to his no-nonsense style of play and command from the centre of the park.

The Welshman also played a huge role under Sam Allardyce for Bolton Wanderers, helping the North West club [qualify for the UEFA Cup in 2007](https://www.uefa.com/uefaeuropaleague/news/newsid=588405.html).

With the anniversary of his passing, supporters have paid tribute on social media – here’s what they had to say:
