# Newcastle United: Fans react as Joelinton makes his black and white bow

**Steve Bruce’s tenure as Newcastle United manager got off to an underwhelming start today as they lost 1-0 to Arsenal.**

A goal from Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang was enough to see the three points head back down south the Gunners, and the result gives Bruce plenty to think about already with his team.

The biggest signing of the summer for the Magpies was the arrival of Brazilian striker Joelinton, who was given his debut by Bruce today as he looked for his new striker to trouble the Arsenal backline.

While he did record three shots and win an impressive 8 aerial duels (per [WhoScored](https://www.whoscored.com/Teams/23/Show/England-Newcastle-United)), whether or not the South American could score goals was questioned by the [Daily Star](https://www.dailystar.co.uk/sport/football/797669/Arsenal-Newcastle-player-ratings-Joelinton-Aubameyang-Pepe) in their player ratings, in which the big-money man was awarded a **7/10**.

Newcastle fans seemed divided too on the performance of Joelinton, who was [reported](https://www.theguardian.com/football/2019/jul/23/newcastle-united-sign-joelinton-club-record-hoffenheim-brazil) to have cost the Magpies £40m in July.

With that then, we took a look on Twitter to see just what Newcastle fans had to say about their big-money new signing…

> I think people have jumped on Joelinton far too quickly. The boy was a bit sloppy yes, but he is a unit and is just 22. Chances will come.

> Get behind him.
