# Newcastle United: Fans slam asking price for Philippe Coutinho as potential new owners target him post-takeover

**Many Newcastle United fans have slammed the asking price for former Liverpool player Philippe Coutinho as [Mundo Deportivo](https://www.mundodeportivo.com/) (via [NUFC 360](https://twitter.com/NUFC360/status/1258383846002896896)) claim that FC Barcelona are said to want 100 million euros for him.**

As per the tweet, the proposed owners at St. James’ Park would like to sign Coutinho if the prospective takeover goes through. The Saudi-led consortium, backed by the country’s Public Investment Fund (PIF) and spearheaded by businesswoman Amanda Staveley, will perhaps be looking for a statement addition if their bid goes through, and the ex-Anfield ace could fit the bill.

Coutinho made 201 appearances in all competitions for the Reds, scoring 54 goals and providing 45 assists, according to [Transfermarkt](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/philippe-coutinho/leistungsdatendetails/spieler/80444/plus/0?saison=&verein=31&liga=&wettbewerb=&pos=&trainer_id=). With a goal or an assist in every other game, these are relatively impressive statistics for an attacking midfield player.

Indeed, the 27-year old has since moved to Spain and is currently on loan at Bayern Munich, but he could make a return to the Premier League if the potential new owners are willing to pay his asking price.

Nevertheless, these members of the Toon faithful slammed the figure:

> With the current conditions no player would now be worth £100mil imo unless it was Messi. Cousin hi is certainly not worth that price tag and I won’t be surprised if the Takeover happens this will be the norm given our financial backing.
