# Newcastle United: Former Magpie Ivan Toney linked with £9m Premier League return

**Ivan Toney was a former Newcastle United prospect before making the switch to Peterborough United for just [£650,000](https://www.peterboroughtoday.co.uk/sport/football/posh/ivan-is-ready-to-repay-manager-s-faith-as-reports-suggest-peterborough-united-paid-a-650-000-fee-for-his-services-1-8596253) – but now the youngster is being linked with a multi-million pound move back to the top flight.**

Toney, who has scored a noteworthy [35 goals whilst assisting 11 others in 75 games for The Posh](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/ivan-toney/leistungsdatenverein/spieler/251664), is attracting huge attention whilst guiding his club to a potential play-off spot in England’s third division – prompting Premier League clubs to take note of his obvious quality and potentially snap up the starlet for £9m.

According to [The Sun](https://www.thesun.co.uk/sport/football/10345811/peterborough-13m-ivan-toney-bournemouth-burnley/), Bournemouth and Burnley are two clubs particularly interested in offering a step up to the top flight for the Englishman – with both outfits keen on strengthening their forward line with a £9m swoop, though Peterborough want £13m.

The Magpies sold Toney for barely a ninth of his current worth [back in 2018](https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/45126998), perhaps highlighting even more potential criticism towards those behind the scenes over the decision to sell him for that amount without at least including a sell-on clause.

Now, with Toney’s star quality evident for all to see following his hot streak, Newcastle could be regretting the overall decision [to sell him for just £650,000](https://www.peterboroughtoday.co.uk/sport/football/posh/ivan-is-ready-to-repay-manager-s-faith-as-reports-suggest-peterborough-united-paid-a-650-000-fee-for-his-services-1-8596253).

At the time, it looked like the youngster didn’t have a future at St. James’ Park, so few could blame them for deciding to sell him on and make a small profit – with Toney having [signed for Newcastle from Northampton Town in 2015](https://www.skysports.com/football/news/11678/9938218/ivan-toney-signs-for-newcastle-united) for an undisclosed fee.

However, given his age, perhaps you could argue that the Magpies potentially didn’t sell him on for a good enough deal in terms of either a buy-back clause or including a sell-on clause – with Toney being just 22 at the time of his sale to Peterborough.

This isn’t the first [blunder executive decision the board has made](https://www.theguardian.com/football/2019/jun/24/rafael-benitez-leaving-newcastle-contract-expires-30-june) during the current regime’s tenure, and it’s unlikely to be the last, but one thing is definitely certain – the League One hitman could have a sparkling future at the top.
